'Cliddesden' Model Railway Layout.

By Alan Durham.

A Britsh Railways Southern Region branch line.

After some 15 odd years of planning my EM gauge (1:76 scale) layout is now very much starting to take shape outside of my imagination and beyond its 2 dimensional representation on paper, having previously modelled mainly in OO gauge, the last project being Edwards Road Sidings.

Class 33 on short freight train

Cliddesden otherwise known as Buggleskelly to anybody familiar with the Will Hay film "Oh Mister Porter" was on the Basingstoke and Alton Light Railway and this is simply an exercise in 'what if'. What if the line for whatever reason was not a light railway? I have a few theories about why the line in my imagination was more than a light railway and became an integral part of the Southern Railway network, which I will discuss further at a later date.

My plans are nothing elaborate or ground breaking, the layout is primarily for my own entertainment and hopefully will be constructed within the realms of my modelling skills which are probably best described as average. John and Dave (of Rhineside fame), both old modelling friends have expressed and interest in this project and I have and will continue to take advantage of their skills and experience. The layout is based in the late 1950s and early 1960s (ish), however I am not going to be to constrained by times as this layout is purely for my own self indulgence and if I want to run something out of place either geographically or time wise then I probably will. Cliddesden will have a single platform with a passing loop at the Alton end of the station and a small goods yard and is basically a mirror image of the track plan that used to be at Lasham and Bentworth, another station on the line between Basingstoke and Alton. The intention is to model the through passage of passenger and freight trains whilst having the ability shunt a few wagons in the small goods yard. It is my intention to build from scratch, kit build, or modify propriety items in order to give the layout a little individuality.
